A Humanistic Hanukka

Much as the Maccabbees seized control of their own lives, Humanistic Jews take their future into their own hands. They choose how they will live, seeking to behave courageously and with integrity. Hanukka is an endorsement of human daring, human ingenuity, and hope. Humanistic Jews celebrate Hanukka as a reminder that human beings can use their abilities to enhance the quality of life.

The symbol of Haunkka, the eight-branched candelabrum, or menora, and its flickering lights are a reminder of the Jewish people's struggles, courage, and fragile triumphs. The flames are a link to the past and a tribute to the dignity of Jews everywhere.
